Many entrepreneurs get so wrapped up in the day-to-day of their businesses and lives that they lose sight of themselves and having fun. I know I have. Have you?
At my recent mastermind retreat, my coach asked us to create a theme for the next six months. The theme that came to mind for me was “Step it up!” My mastermind group is made up of 25 high-level business owners; however, this theme is technically not about my business, it’s about my life. It’s time for me to step up the fun, to step up my engagement, to step up my excitement, to step up my commitment. It’s time to get out of my own rut.
I know that technically we are supposed to separate our lives and our businesses. However, I find that as a business owner you are your business and your business is your life. That means that when we change what we do in one area, the other area changes too. So if I’m feeling disconnected in my life, I know that I’m disconnected in my business too.
I am excited to step up my engagement in my life. I want to go on hikes, go to movies, spend time connecting with friends, maybe throw a party and certainly be on the lookout for and embrace opportunities. I am sure that as I do this I will naturally step up my activity in my business. I will come up with new ideas, engage with more people, fill programs, be more interested, have more fun and by extension… increase my revenues.
After four very full days of masterminding, my coach reminded us to keep our themes in mind and to make sure to check in with our theme before we chose to do anything over the next six months. What’s more is that if we don’t think that what we are doing is in alignment with our theme we should NOT do it.
“Step it up!” was the theme that rang true for me. I’m sharing this with you and I wrote it on the white board that I look at every day so that I make it real and keep it top of mind.
What’s your theme? I encourage you to take a moment and think about what you need for yourself right now. It may be in your business, it might be in your life. What do you want to use as your own touchstone? To help you make your decisions over the next six months? Now go ahead and write it down. Post it where you will see it frequently and add it to the comments section below. Make it real; tell everyone about it and it will happen.

Love this, Carrie! I was actually thinking about creating a theme for my next 6 months and decided to take a mini medicine walk earlier today to ask the trees what it should be. What came up was: “Say yes to ME 100% of the time!” Sounds simple perhaps yet has long been an area where I tend to waffle. Thanks for putting out all this great theme energy out there!

Ruth… say yes to me is hardly simple! Can’t wait to see where this theme brings you over the next six months.

I just took my son (who is a Marine) back to Camp Lejune where he is deploying to Afghanistan for the next 7 months. My theme is: Life Just Got Real. In order to lessen my anxiety of him being away, I am going to be concentrating on starting my own coaching business in an effort to help people reach their goals and desires.

Hey Doug,
I think that’s an amazing theme. Very much like mine it transcends every part of your life. The more your life grows the better and faster your business will grow. I wish your son safety and strength as he embarks on a journey that will undoubtedly change his life and grow him in ways that he never imagined. And as I read back that last sentence I’m thinking I’m wishing you exactly the same sentiment. And of course, please reach out if there is anything you need to help you grow your business!

Hi Carrie,
I enjoy your article so much as it also echos to what I have in mind after seeking in the last few months. Your writing is like a confirmation and a little booster to do it together. My theme is “Transformation and redemption”- I possibly will consider a new hair style too 🙂 to remind me that my life can be different than before now that I have something new to learn from “Carrie Through” group, and books and bible that help me grow in wisdom and commitment.
I’ve already started. Yay!!
Appreciate your writings!!

My theme is keep “my eye on the goal”. Ask myself every day, is this taking me toward my goal, in my personal, professional, and financial life.
