I was out for a run. A woman came up from behind and passed me. She was moving fast and gained ground with each stride. In that moment I had a few options available to me. I could ignore her completely and keep running my own race. I could give up running entirely because I would never be that fast. I could use her as an incentive to go a little faster and improve myself.

Some days, we are the motivator and others, we are motivated. Thank you for this post.

It definitely works both ways!

Hi Carrie,
It’s been a long time since we have connected. This question caught my attention so thought I would reply:
I don’t view “competitors” as competitors at all. I view them as other people doing good work in the world.

Twila,
It has been a long time. I hope you are well.
I love that perspective. The more people out there doing good work the better we will all be.
What I also like about the way you’ve framed “competition” is that you become part of a team and everyone gets to move forward together.

Competition is good if it encourages you to be your best. But one has to remember each person’s business is different and we have to honor what we bring to the table as well. Maybe our competitors find inspiration from us too?
