- Sort & Categorize. Clear your work area & get supplies. What do you have? Sort through it and create broad categories.
- Purge. What do you really need? Create rules and follow them ie: “Get rid of all old magazines except for Business Week” — and stick to it! Ask yourself questions: Is it replaceable? Have you ever used it? How would you use it? Does it really have to be done? Could someone else do it?
- Find a Home. Ask yourself: Where do you use it? Where would you like to use it? How often do you use it? When do you have the time to do it? Think about systems you have that work. If it works, don’t mess with it! Create new systems that either build on ones that work or are similar to ones that work.
- Put it away. Find a container, a box with a label, or a closet, drawer etc to put it away in. For an appointment or task, schedule time to do it on your calendar. LABEL EVERYTHING!
- Maintain. How are you going to keep your new systems going? Are you going to schedule time to do it? Are you going to delegate it? Can it be tied into another habit or routine?
