- Organize for reasons that matter to you, not because someone told you to.
- Set realistic goals — don’t try to do everything at once.
- Break up large tasks into smaller ones.
- Keep a to-do list & put it in a highly visible place.
- Set deadlines when creating to-do’s — things are more likely to get done if you have committed to a date.
- Get a calendar or appointment book (electronic or paper) & use it!
- Assign a set amount of time to work (½ hour, 45-minutes, etc.) and commit to that amount of time. Say it aloud and set a timer. When the timer goes off — stop working. You’ll be amazed at how much you can get done when there is an end in sight.
- Color code files for quick identification (kids, credit cards, finances).
- Treat email as you would paper documents. Keep only the ones you need and file them with the same filing system you use for your paper documents.
- Don’t use paperclips in your files — either they don’t stay on or they catch on to more papers.
- Put away as soon as you’ve cluttered — this one is the hardest of all!
- Open mail in the same place every day & near a garbage can!
